The history of the Spanish Association of International Economics and Finance (AEEFI) is closely related to the organization of the Conferences on International Economics. Following the first edition, held in Valladolid in 1986 and due to the initiative of the Department of Economics of the University of Valladolid, the Conferences on International Economics set up definitively after the second edition, also held in Valladolid in 1991. Since then, the Conferences are convened on a biannual basis, with the next editions being held in Murcia (1993), Castellón (1995), Pamplona (1997) and Valencia (1999). During these years, the Conferences on International Economics establish themselves as one of the scientific meetings of reference in the Spanish academic panorama, offering a periodical forum for presentation and discussion of the most relevant academic work in the field of international economics.

Taking as starting point the experience accumulated in the organization of the previous editions of the Conferences, AEEFI was established in June 1999, with occasion of the VI Conference on International Economics. AEEFI sets up as the Spanish Chapter of the International Economics and Finance Society (IEFS). From 2012 onward, the conference is organized on an annual basis.

The AEEFI has organized the following editions of the Conferences on International Economics: Málaga (2001), Ciudad Real (2003), La Laguna (2005), Madrid (2007), Barcelona (2009), Castellón (2011), Granada (2012), Palma de Mallorca (2013), Salamanca (2014) and Donostia-San Sebastián (2015), A Coruña (2016), La Rábida (2017), Vila Real (2018).
